Staff Spotlight – Mark Gilboard

By Lorena Schott | August 3, 2017

Mark joined the WESST ABQ team in April 2017. We are happy to have him as part of the WESST family and hope you enjoy learning a little more about him.

What made you want to come to work for WESST?

The idea of giving back to the community. WESST uses its impressive stable of committed experts and wide network of strategic advisors to help our communities get stronger by consulting with and training people who want to start or improve their small businesses. I relished the opportunity to help make my neighbors and fellow New Mexicans be all that they can be in their business pursuits.

What was your very first job?

Technically it was paperboy. I delivered a local town newspaper, The Chelmsford (MA) Newsweekly on my bike, in one of those canvas shoulder bags, and I probably made $5 a week in tips. My first “real” job was as a counselor at a summer camp for developmentally disabled children called “Camp Paul for Exceptional Children”.

What’s your favorite part of working here?

There are two I can think of right off the bat – the obvious one is the large expanse of windows that overlook downtown Albuquerque right outside our office door on the second floor of the WESST Enterprise Center on Broadway. I’d guess it’s about 60 feet or more of clear glass to view the sky, the clouds, and the cityscape, including a lot of cool new building construction. The other favorite part is the collaboration I get to do with the other great people here at WESST – working together to improve everything that we offer, constantly tweaking our outreach and best practices to serve an ever-changing small business community.

What do you do when you’re not working?

I love spending time with my family, travelling, hiking, camping and enjoying whatever the kids are into at the time – sports, music, school plays, whatever their activities might be. For “me time” I like to collect Vinyl LP’s and listen to them on vintage stereo gear at home.

What do you wish people knew about WESST?

That we’ve been here for 28+ years offering training and consulting from an amazing group of local business experts who are committed to making Albuquerque a great place to start and grow small businesses. WESST has long been a key partner in the growth of some of our city’s best and brightest (and especially women-owned) enterprises- retail outlets, online businesses, and technology companies. WESST’s profile has really increased since the opening of the business incubator in downtown Albuquerque in 2009, but at that point we had already been a valued community non-profit organization for 20 years! I hope more and more people come to know that in the coming years.
