In 2023, Marissa and Chris Barretto, co-owners of Stage & Screen Academy, reached out to WESST seeking capital, marketing guidance, and business consulting. The husband-and-wife duo had a shared vision: to create a performing arts academy that gave Albuquerque children a place to explore acting, audition techniques, filmmaking, and more. Marissa, an educator, and Chris, a film industry professional, were inspired to start the school after searching in vain for acting classes for their young daughter. Recognizing a gap in the community, they decided to fill it themselves.
When they first met with WESST, the Academy existed only as a dream and a series of “pop-up” workshops hosted in a borrowed church space. They came to WESST for guidance on business registration, finding a commercial location, and securing the capital needed to bring their vision to life.
Securing capital for a brand-new business in the arts was another major hurdle. Without an established track record, accessing funding to open a dedicated studio was difficult. Through WESST's microloan program, Stage & Screen Academy secured the funding they needed to officially launch. The initial loan helped them open their own studio space — a welcoming, secular environment that allowed them to grow their programs and better serve their students.
In summer 2024, they hosted their first Nick-Flix Youth Movie Making Camp, giving local kids the chance to step into the world of filmmaking both in front of and behind the camera. The camp was a resounding success, blending creative education with hands-on production experience.
WESST also provided ongoing consulting, helping Chris and Marissa refine their operations, marketing strategy, and growth plans. Today, the Academy employs two full-time staff members and continues to expand its offerings. They are now preparing for their next phase of growth, including renovations to make the space accessible for special-needs students and upgrading their studio with new backdrops and equipment. They continue to provide a vibrant space for Albuquerque’s young performers.
