Jakia Fuller is a full-time multidisciplinary creative artist, but back in 2020, she was looking for resources to simply get started. She wanted to know what a creative business looked like, and she realized that starting a business, in any industry, was the same for many. She learned about WESST through an online search and that it was a resource for women entrepreneurs.
“One of the first obstacles I faced was the fear of not knowing what to do,” says Jakia. “I worked with WESST to overcome that feeling of getting started, and I realized I can also learn as I go.” Working with WESST, she was able to establish her LLC and obtain her EIN. She attended a business plan training and completed the Empower by GoDaddy training series to learn about website development and how to manage a website.
When Jakia decided to shift professionally to creative arts full-time, she reconnected with WESST to explore lending possibilities. After discussion with our team, she realized she did not need to pursue a loan and instead shifted her focus to further developing her creative vision and focusing on business planning. She credits WESST for helping her better understand the need to build a stronger foundation, what she calls a “huge lesson learn.” She was even more inspired and determined to move forward.
I feel like WESST has always been in my back pocket if and when I needed a resource, and I love referring people to WESST. They helped me grow, and now I get to help expand opportunities for others too.
Jakia is currently the inaugural fellow for the 2025-2026 SURFACE: Emerging Curators of New Mexico Fellowship. She curated SURFACE: Artist Alumni Satellite Gallery Exhibition, Route 66 - A Deep Imagining, currently featured at Blue Sky Coworking NM, where her curatorial work will also be on display over the next year. Jakia’s personal art is included in The Woods Before Sunrise exhibition at the Albuquerque Museum, on display through October 2026.
