WESST Pop-Up Shop Spotlight: TinCan Fabric and Textile

By Lorena Schott | September 22, 2022

After a two-year hiatus, WESST is excited to host the 5th annual pop-up shop  (Oct. 14th 11a-4p, 609 Broadway Blvd NE) where you can shop locally and find unique Made in New Mexico products and gifts. Over the next few weeks, we would like to introduce you to a few of our vendors to give everyone a preview of their products and the opportunity to learn about their entrepreneurial journey.  We hope you enjoy!

Introducing Christina Candelaria – TinCan Fabric and Textile

Where did the “big idea” for your business come from?

My love of sewing from an early age was the foundation for the present project.  I discovered that I could use beautiful recycled fabrics to make completely new things.  I started to collect natural fabrics, silk, cotton, linen, wool to use in my sewing projects

What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur?

It seemed only natural to want to find a way to sell the items that I produced.  I had encouragement from friends and family and have started small.

What obstacles did you face while creating your business and how did you overcome them?

I found that a home business can, little by little, take over the space.  I made a decision to convert an unused covered storage space into a workshop which  gave me the setup I needed.

How do you market your business? Which tactics have been most successful?

Some marketing is being done on social media, email and word of mouth.

How do you stand out from your competitors?

The use of natural, recycled fabric, good workmanship, in addition to original designs and techniques are the defining qualities of our textile goods.

Would you do anything differently if you could start your business over again? If so, what?

Perhaps begin much earlier than I did.

What advice do you have for other people who want to start their own business?

Make the investment in time and persevere.

What do you do when you’re not working?

Gardening and reading are some of the activities I enjoy.
