Boosting Hispanic Entrepreneurs During National Hispanic Heritage Month

By Lorena Schott | September 14, 2021

During National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15- October 15), we honor the achievements of Hispanics across the United States. It’s the perfect time to celebrate Latino small business owners’ contributions to New Mexico’s economy and discuss how we can help them thrive and grow their businesses.

Hispanic-owned businesses generate significant economic benefit, spurring innovation and building wealth in diverse communities throughout America. Latino small-business owners are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S.  Over the past 10 years, the number of Latino business owners grew by 34%, compared to 1% for all business owners in the United States, according to a study from Stanford University. More Latinos than ever are applying for small business loans to launch or grow their businesses.

The growing success of Latino small business owners comes as Latinos are becoming a strong economic force in the U.S. The same Stanford study found Latino-owned businesses contributed about $500 billion to the economy in annual sales.

To encourage these positive trends, WESST offers support, training and resources that enable Hispanic entrepreneurs to build and expand their businesses.

Are you interested in starting your own business?

If you are interested in starting a small business, WESST can help. Our services are offered in both English and Spanish. WESST’s expert business consultants can help you accomplish your goals and overcome your challenges, whether that’s starting a new business, growing your existing one, or weathering a crisis.  A helping hand is just a click away.

Each person has the ability to lift up the Hispanic business community this month and every month.
Positive change will only occur if every one of us takes small steps to contribute. If you’re a small business owner yourself, consider volunteering to mentor and share your perspective and expertise. If you have a few extra dollars, make a purchase at a Hispanic-owned business or you can also donate to WESST so that we can continue to fulfill our mission of lifting up Latino/a/x entrepreneurs.  And if you’re just someone with a social media account, do your best to amplify a few Hispanic-owned businesses that others in your network might not be aware of.

This extra effort will pay off in no time as you not only support the Hispanic and Latino business community — but invest in it.

Below is a list of Hispanic small businesses working with WESST.  This list is far from exhaustive, but it’s a good place to start looking for businesses that are owned by and work to promote and inspire Hispanic entrepreneurs. As we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, we should focus on how we can better support this community by helping current business owners grow their businesses and empowering aspiring entrepreneurs.
